Murang’a woman charged with abortion

 

justiceA 24-year-old barmaid was today arraigned in a Murang’a court charged with terminating her pregnancy of sixth months through an illegal abortion. Hellen Wanjiru Wairimu denied a count of attempting to conceal birth and was released on a bond of Shs 10,000 with a surety of similar amount. The prosecution told the court that the accused procured an abortion on May 20, this year at about 3 am in her rented house within Mukuyu trading centre in Murang’a County.

Suspicious neighbours tipped the local chief of the incident who in turn alerted the police who upon visiting the scene found the foetus deposited in a washing basin. The prosecution further said a medical report indicated that she had procured an abortion. Murang’a chief magistrate Bildad Ochieng granted her an alternative cash bail of Shs. 5,000 until June 4, when the case will be mentioned. Her case will be heard on June 20, this year.
